Reiki: Vibrational Medicine
For many years, the body has been regarded as a sum of unrelated parts. Western medicine looks upon the body as a physical, biomechanical machine that is controlled by the brain and the nervous system. Eastern medicine sees the body as the sum of its parts: a whole, integrated system made up of different levels including mental, spiritual and emotional energies. Thousands of years ago there was a split between religion and science and in the West the body came to be viewed as an intricate mechanism separate from the spirit.
In Eastern medicine there is a vital force known as Ki that animates this biomechanical machine. In India it is known as Prana and in China it is known as Chi. The word is Japanese for Life Energy, Reiki means Universal Life Energy. When Ki energy leaves the body it becomes lifeless. We are more than just a physical body that we can see and touch “…we have three other bodies. These non-physical bodies, non-visible bodies are energy levels that are composed of Ki that direct the state of the physical body.”†
All these bodies work together in a complex energy matrix. When there is a physical symptom it is usually a sign or a communication from the body that there is an imbalance of energy in the system. To treat only the physical symptom is to mask the root of the problem.
Today’s modern medicine has become so technologically advanced that we can replace or repair a diseased organ or mechanically repair a bone or joint. Yet, wouldn’t it be advantageous to know why an organ failed or what caused a disease? If we knew the cause, we could work on prevention of disease through wellness programs and not have to wait until we are sick or disabled and consequently dependent on the medical system. The concept of prevention and wellness programs includes taking responsibility for our own health (which encompasses our mental, emotional and spiritual state).
Holistic medicine infers that we look at the “whole" person. When a Reiki or “vibrational” healer interviews a client she addresses the physical issues but also asks questions such as “What are the physical symptoms?” “What is going on in your life right now?” “How are you feeling emotionally?”, and, “Is there some prominent issue in your life that you are struggling with?”.
A Reiki practitioner asks these questions and then proceeds with the appropriate treatment. The Reiki relaxes and rebalances the client. As the stress and tension is released, a feeling of calmness and safety comes over them. The session actually becomes a meditative contemplation of the questions asked previously. As the body relaxes it becomes integrated with the mind and shares information. As previously disconnected events or thoughts begin to make sense some of these questions may be answered and the process of revealing hidden feelings and emotions may begin. In society today it is much more acceptable to have a physical disease than a mental or emotional disease, but without being in touch with our feelings we are only a one-dimensional being and are not experiencing a full life.
Stress and tension is a defense that many people use to armor or control unwanted feelings or emotions. You may hold emotions down for years, but not without paying a price and ending up in physical dis-ease or with severe mental or emotional problems. The Reiki energy dissolves this fear and unblocks the feeling. Possibly, this fear is as simple as: “What will happen if I express this feeling? What will I do, what will she do?” In any case, when that feeling is expressed a complete balancing occurs and the symptom usually transfers into some type of information. This information can then be utilized to bring us into the present and to clear blockages that keep us stuck in the past.
To understand what these symptoms of the body indicate, you have to know more about the energy system of the body. The physical body is made up of energy. There are seven mayor energy centers called chakras or energy transformers. It is the chakras that convert subtle Ki energy into physical matter and each chakra regulates the organs in a specific area.
As an example, energetically, the heart center (which expresses love for yourself and others) is the most important chakra in the body. When the heart chakra begins to open, one transcends the lower earthly chakras and begins to connect to the higher spiritual levels. Physically, the heart chakra affects the lungs, bronchial tubes, breast and the entire circulatory system. Imbalances can include heart attacks, coronary heart disease and asthma. Inspired by a fear of rejection or abandonment, a heart attack could be caused by a “hardening of the heart” due to an inability to express love for another (or oneself).
When using Reiki the body is treated at an energetic level, looking at the essence of the dis-ease instead of the end result or symptom. Reiki is a unique healing system that operates at a higher level of human functioning. You are channeling intelligent, universal force energy through your body and out your hands. Because this energy is intelligent and creative it is impossible to give a client too much or too little energy in the wrong place. The energy is self-regulating and is the simplistic beauty of Reiki. We are merely the host and the recipients of it. When you connect to this energy you become aware of your interconnectedness in the world. This awareness imparts a feeling of being balanced, of being grounded and of being synchronized with the flow of life.
Reiki has been traced back to ancient Tibet, but probably was used before that time. In those days Reiki was only learned by a select group of people and involved an intense type of training. This ancient healing art was lost for some time. Dr. Mikao Usui rediscovered it in Japan in the 1800’s. By the 1970’s, Reiki was being taught throughout the world, including the United States.
Today, anyone can learn Reiki. It is the easiest and most natural healing system to learn.
A Reiki Master through an attunement process teaches it. This process opens and aligns the students’ chakras, including the chakras in their hands. To activate the system the practitioner only needs to put his hands on the client. They feel extremely warm as the energy flows effortlessly through him to the location that is in need of balance.
For anyone in the healing professions, Reiki can enhance the relationship between the patient and the practitioner, and so aid in the recovery process at a more profound level through touch. The healing professional that uses Reiki will share a heightened sense of intuition, clarity, and compassion with their patient.
The greatest aspect of Reiki is that we can use it on ourselves at anytime. It will help to keep us energized, it will minimize stress and it will keep us more positively focused. More and more people are learning Reiki. It is a natural extension of our own abilities and can help us realize our full potential.
