A type of physical therapy often used to treat myofascial pain syndrome is called myofascial release therapy. The myofascia will gently be massaged by your therapist and they will feel for tightened or stiff areas. Elastic and pliable is how normal myofascia should feel like. With light manual pressure, your therapist will begin stretching and massaging the areas that are rigid to the touch. The tissue and supportive sheath are then aided by your therapist in releasing tightness and pressure. Until the therapist feels the tension is fully released, the process is repeated multiple times on the same trigger point and on other trigger points.

The pain you feel most prominently may not originate near these areas where the massage therapist is working, because the broader network of muscles that might be causing your pain is what myofascial release works. It releases trigger points across a broad section of your muscular system to try to reduce tension throughout your body.
