Osteoporosis and Myofascial Release Therapy (MFR)

Osteoporosis and Myofascial Release Therapy (MFR)

Your body is better able to strengthen the rest of itself when you strengthen the fascia, so myofascial release therapy (MFR) is an important part of treatment when receiving an osteoporosis diagnosis.

Fascia is what?

Fascia is basically a sheet of connective tissue that separates or binds together the body’s entire tissues, organs, and muscles. It is one of many different types of connective tissue.

The whole human body is permeated by the three-dimensional web that is the fascia. Thinking of the expanse of the fascial system as a layer of connective tissue that’s similar to a ligament or tendon, and that starts with the top layer directly below the skin and extending to two deeper layers, is the best way to envision it.

The fascia is a supple, relaxed web, much like the weave in a loose-knit sweater, when it’s in its normal healthy state. However, it is less pliable and more rigid, and can create tensions, pulls, and pressure as much as 2,000 pounds per square inch when it’s restricted. Fascia is a continuous system with three layers that run from the top of the head through the bottom of the feet.

The three layers that make up the fascia are Superficial Fascia, Deep Fascia, and Deepest Fascia:

  • Directly below the skin you have the Superficial Fascia. Water and fat are stored by it, allowing the muscles to move the skin, as well as nerves to run through it.
  • The Deep Fascia is next, right in the middle, surrounding and infusing with blood vessels, nerves, bone, and muscle to the cellular level.
  • Then, in the bottom sitting within the dura of the craniosacral system, you have the Deepest Fascia.

It is within all or any of the three layers that fascia restrictions can occur.

Muscular tightness and shortness are released with myofascial release therapy (MFR). Numerous symptoms and conditions are addressed by myofascial release therapy.

When experiencing chronic pain in the hip, shoulder, neck, back, or ongoing pain in virtually any area of their body containing soft tissue, and/or after losing function or flexibility from an injury, many patients wisely seek healing with myofascial treatment.

Other conditions are effectively treated with myofascial release therapy, including migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, and Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder. Usually included in the symptoms are:

  • Back pain, headaches, and chronic pain in any parts or part of the body.
  • Pain is produced by a sense of excessive pressure on joints or muscles.
  • The body is pulled out of alignment by the tightness of the tissues that can also restrict motion, causing, for instance, individuals to overuse one hip or shoulder by favoring one over the other.
